Library Offers More Technological Resources Via New Laptops

The Hasbrouck Heights Public Library recently purchased 15 new HP laptops which feature the latest Microsoft 2010 software, available to patrons to use at the library to help expand their skills.Mimi Hui, library director, said a technology upgrade was needed as the library was currently down to only four laptops which was not enough to meet the daily demand.Cheap Laptops Not Equal to Inferior Items .The Board of Trustees and Friends of the Library gave the library the okay to use some of its endowments funds to purchase the new laptops.
The new laptops were first introduced during a recent job training session held at the library and they went over well, Hui said. Patrons can check out a laptop to use at the library through the front desk by showing a picture ID and current address.Patrons can take advantage of the many new features offered and familiarize themselves with Microsoft 2010, which can be a huge asset to those currently job seeking as not only can they use the features to create or update resumes but it’s important to have knowledge of the latest skills, Hui explained.
A feature of Microsoft 2010 allows users to save word files as PDFs which makes sending resumes easier and also gives patrons the abiliity  to save the file to a flash drive and print out via the library’s color copiers, at a cost of 50 cent per page.Hui explained that the desktop computer at the library are connected to a black and white printer so those wishing to make a color copy require the assistance of a staff member to make a print in color for the cost of 50 cents. The new software now gives patrons the ability to make color prints on their own.
Hui says the library hopes these laptops will last a long time and hopes to see people come in to use these services.“Be in charge, even when you are out of the office,” said Connie Koch, founder. “Now, you can monitor your business at the same time you check the pulse of your customers with in-person visits. The sync feature frees the business traveler from cumbersome laptops, putting essential company resources at their fingertips wherever they are, not just at WiFi locations.”Android users need only sign up for a Gmail account to take advantage of the mobile feature. Nothing further than sign-up is necessary. Other mobile devices might require additional setup.
