The military has a long and varied history of uniforms. Armed forces in general probably first used uniforms for a number of reasons, many of which are still relevant. The first uniforms were probably simply distinguishing marks in conspicuous places on the clothing or armor. For example, American military uniforms have distinct looks that immediately indicate to others what branch the service person is in, and also indicate the type of activity that person is engaging in at that moment, due to the appropriateness of each uniform for given duties.Military style clothing has applications in civilian life as well.
