How Digital Marketing Fueled Fashion Label Tory Burch’s Global Expansion
American fashion designer Tory Burch founded her label in February 2004, the same month that Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his Harvard dorm room.In the fashion industry, Burch’s rise has been nearly as striking: the 45-year-old CEO has expanded her line of ready-to-wear clothing and accessories to more than 450 department and specialty stores worldwide, as well as dozens of Tory Burch boutiques in the U.S., Europe and Asia. She opened 20 new shops, including several in international cities (Osaka, Seoul, Hong Kong, Kobe and Taipai), in 2010 alone.
Much of her success can be linked to an aggressive digital strategy, says Miki Berardelli, who has served as chief marketing officer of Tory Burch since 2009. The company launched ecommerce immediately after opening its first shop in downtown Manhattan, and toryburch.com generates more revenue than any physical store. Burch is one of the few designers to maintain a direct, ongoing dialogue with her friends and fans on Twitter, which she does in an easy-going and authentic manner. The company’s blog, which is helmed by former InStyle editor Honor Brodie, is broadly recognized in the industry as one of the leading manifestations of ongoing, brand-developed content. We spoke with Berardelli about Tory Burch’s advancements in ecommerce and social media, and how the company is investing in what Berardelli believes is the “future of ecommerce”: namely, shopping through Facebook.Nokia to release Windows 8 tablets this June, top drawer Lumia in the works? A transcript of our Q&A is featured below.
I think it was really Tory’s vision to create a luxury brand that is accessible and has a sense of social responsibility — those were things that resonated with me both personally and professionally. There was also of course the people and the culture and, from a marketing perspective, the emotional connection that the customer had, and still has, with the brand.Tory always says that in the early years, not having a tremendous budget forced her to really think out of the box and tap into her and her team’s creativity. It was very much about editorial relationships and personal appearances, which enabled her to connect directly to the customer. Seven and a half years years later, that startup spirit is very much alive. We still have not bought traditional advertisements in U.S. magazines, although we do some display and online advertising.

Tablet Accessories Tech Treasures
While last year may have been the year of the tablet (with the introduction/invasion of the iPad), this year certainly qualifies as the year of the tablet accessory. Whether it’s a case, a pillow, stand or speaker system, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite devices to go along with our favorite tablets:Products reviewed in this categoryKraken II series iPad 2 case, by Trident CaseHammerhead iPad 2 hard shell caseSpiderpodium tablet, by BreffoiGuy, by Speck ProductsTargus Lap Lounge for iPad 2, by TargusVersavu Keyboard and Case for iPad 2, by TargusJoystick-IT tablet arcade stick, by ThinkGeekSlateShield All-in-1 for iPad, by Addo AccessoriesMagnetic Cabinet Mount and Viewing Stand, by MacallyToddy iPad cleaner cloth, by Toddy GearCrayola ColorStudio HD and iMarker stylus, by Griffin Technology
Kraken II series iPad 2 case, by Trident Case If you are concerned about protecting your iPad 2 more than a generic case, the Kraken II series offers two levels of protection.Razer Blade Laptop, Lytro Camera Top Innovation Awards. First, there’s a silicone layer that hugs the iPad tightly, offering protection from drops and covering up vital ports with dust and debris protection (unfortunately, it’s not waterproofed). The second layer consists of two different polycarbonate hard shells (front and back) that snap over the first layer and iPad to provide more protection. The front part of the hard shell offers a screen protector as well, allowing users to still use the touchscreen on the iPad but keeping smudges and scratches away from the glass. Two clamps on the top also snap the pieces into place, and the silicone layer fits nicely with the polycarbonate hard shell. Taking everything apart is a bit difficult, but that also means it’s not flimsy.
All of this does add some bulk to the device, so I’d only recommend using this if you absolutely need the drop, dust and debris protection offered by the Kraken II. The series also comes in a range of colors to choose from as well, giving you some style to the iPad 2.Hammerhead iPad 2 hard shell case If you get a new iPad 2, you can separately purchase one of Apple’s new Smart Covers, which let you turn on and off the iPad when you open the case. The problem with those, however, is that the case only protects the front and side of the iPad 2, the back is still exposed. The Hammerhead case adds a back shell to the case as well, protecting it from impacts and scratches. The lightweight polymer shell doesn’t add too much bulk to the iPad, and offers the same automatic wake/sleep for the device when opened and closed.

Nokia to release Windows 8 tablets this June, top drawer Lumia in the works?
There's some intriguing Nokia news coming out of France this morning, thanks to Paul Amsellem, head of the company's Gallic outpost. In a recent interview with Parisian daily Les Echos, Amsellem described Nokia's aspirations to regain some of the market share it's lost within France, explaining that his firm is squarely targeting the 60 percent of French users who currently don't own a smartphone. More salient, however, is what the exec had to say about Nokia's plans for future releases. According to Amsellem, Espoo will unveil a new Windows 8 equipped tablet by June 2012. Unfortunately, that's about all he had to say on the subject, but it's certainly enough of a carrot to raise our heart rates -- as are Amsellem's comments on the Lumia 800, which hit French stores yesterday. Comparing the handset to a BMW 5 series, the chief went on to say that Nokia "will soon have a full range with a 7 Series and 3 Series." He didn't elaborate much on this analogy, though its implication is rather self-evident -- new Lumia cousins may be in the works. Of course, it remains to be seen when and if the company will expand upon its Lumia line, though we'll definitely be keeping our yeux on it.
DLNA and WiFi Direct are both pretty sweet technologies on their own but, together, they offer the promise of simple, wireless media streaming without the need for that pesky router middleman. The Digital Living Network Alliance has officially incorporated WiFi Direct into its interoperability guidelines, which means you could soon be streaming movies and music between devices (like your laptop and smartphone) without connecting to a home (or public) network. And don't forget, only one part of the equation needs to be WiFi Direct certified -- so don't worry that your aging computer doesn't support it, as long as your smartphone does you're golden. Check out the PR after the break. And just like that, HP joined the Ultrabook party. After announcing the Folio in Australia yesterday, the company went and made it official here in the states too. And man, do we get the feeling the outfit's been watching the competition very closely: this guy starts at $900 and comes standard with a 128GB mSATA SSD and a backlit keyboard. Provided it comes close to matching its promise of nine hours of battery life, it could give the identically priced Toshiba Portege Z830 a run for its money. Not to mention, it undercuts the MacBook Air ($1,299 and up), along with the ASUS Zenbook UX31 and Lenovo IdeaPad U300s, both of which start at $1,100 with a 128GB SSD and no backlit keyboard. Good on ya, HP.

Tenba Discovery Large Photo and Laptop Daypack
Recently, photography has been picking up popularity in both the amateur and professional sectors. As an amateur photographer, I always love to carry my Sony NEX-5 DSLR around with me when I go out exploring NYC or traveling. I wanted a bag that can protect my camera, lens, and accessories and also have room for some other things. The Discovery Large Photo/Laptop Daypack from Tenba looked perfect for me.
Tenba’s Discovery Large Photo/Laptop Daypack came in two colors – Black/Gray or Sage/Khaki. I got the Black/Gray one to review. My first reaction to the Discovery was that it was extremely light at 2.6 lb. The Discovery has a water repellant nylon exterior, but it also comes with a WeatherWrap cover for extra protection.Clallam County to use grant for police laptop purchase. The Discovery comes with standard chest and waist straps. It feels very comfortable to wear. Also there’s plenty of loops for accessories on the strap. On both sides are compression straps to secure and stabilize the load. There’s also a large elasticized pocket on each side for water bottles or other accessories.
The main camera pocket is large. It will fit 2 DSLR bodies along with 4-6 lenses or flash. It’s extremely padded and I won’t worry at all if I dropped my bag. The padding is all secured with Velcro, and the pieces are easily reconfigurable. On the back wall of the top compartment are 4 pockets, 2 pen slots and a clip for your keys. Personally, I wish they offered small zippered pockets on both sides of the top compartment for accessories like batteries or memory cards.
There’s a medium sized mesh pocket and ID card holder located on the flap of the top compartment. Tenba also included a WeatherWrap inside the mesh pocket. The WeatherWrap covers the front completely and partially covers the back. It’s secured by 2 snap-on buttons. With the WeatherWrap on and secured by the snap-on buttons, there’s no way in to the Discovery while you’re wearing it.On the back side is a padded zippered pocket for either a 15” laptop or a hydration pack like a CamelBak. Personally, I think it’s a really tight fit for a laptop to go in there; it was compressing my MacBook a bit too much for my liking.

Razer Blade Laptop, Lytro Camera Top Innovation Awards
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) on Tuesday promised more than 20,000 product launches at its upcoming CES trade show in Las Vegas, following a tradition of CES premieres that spans from the DVD in 1996 and Microsoft's Xbox in 2001 to 3D HDTV in 2009 and Android Honeycomb and the Motorola Atrix last year.
Thirty-two of the 2012 and late 2011 debutantes were named as Best of Innovations Design and Engineering Award Honorees at this evening's CES press preview event in New York. They were judged tops by a panel of consumer electronics industry representatives and journalists for unique features, intended use and function, and overall engineering and design qualities.
As always, the Best of Innovations winners ranged from the peripatetic T-Mobile's HTC Amaze 4G (see slideshow below) smartphone to the domestic LG's 30-cubic-foot refrigerator with Blast Chiller technology, able to cool beverages within five minutes. Speaking of the kitchen, Belkin copped an award for its Kitchen Cabinet Mount, a $50 gadget that lets iPad owners save counter space by attaching their tablets to any cabinet or shelf.
The Digital Imaging category went to the radical Lytro Light Field Camera (above), which promises to let users catch snaps on the fly and focus image specifically, focus on any part of an image afterwards. The Gaming Hardware & Accessories prize went to the Intel Core i7-powered, 17.3-inch-screened Razer Blade, billed by its manufacturer as the first true gaming laptop thanks to a unique control keypad.Of the two newest Best of Innovations categories, Sony scored the Tablets, E-Readers & Netbooks win for its Honeycomb-based Tablet S. Ford's MyFord Mobile, which will let drivers of its Focus Electric control car functions, plan routes, and locate charging stations via smartphone, won the Software & Mobile Apps category.
Back in March, we got our hands on the Motorola Atrix 4G, and like every other reviewer, we crowned it the fastest and most powerful Android handset on the market. The first dual-core smartphone not only delivered ridiculously fast processing speeds, but it did something no other smartphone has ever done: double as a mobile laptop thanks to Motorola's netbook-like accessory, the Lapdock. Six months later, the now Google-owned handset maker has evolved and produced more dominating phones like the Droid Bionic which is currently duking it out with the HTC Rezound for the most powerful smartphone honor. With the holiday season fast approaching, Motorola looks to keep the title at home by introducing the follow-up to its AT&T powerhouse: the Atrix 2.
